Just finished it. Wow. I thought there was already a thread going about this book, but I can't find it right now.
Others who've read it? What do you think? It's one I won't shake easily. I can't stop thinking about those women.

Wow is right, I loved that book, it does stay with you doesn't it. I can't imagine being in these women's minds...((shudder)) Tough lives. Did you read the Kite Runner? I thought it was a beautiful story too.

It's devastating but so perfectly written. In some ways I wonder how a man could tell the women's stories as he did. That's not putting it quite right...but the internal lives of the characters was expressed as clearly and their circumstances and actions were. Unforgettable, I think.
The Kite Runner also, yes. But even though that was about redemption, this one seemed to "get there" more completely somehow.
These books make me think of a woman from Afghanistan who was studying English...this was years ago in Wisconsin. My mother was her tutor and befriended her. I remember thinking Jamilla was so gracious and gentle. This was during the Soviet occupation. Then my youngest daughter dated a guy from Herat when she was in college. His experiences were astonishing, and his parents were suffering culture shock and God knows what other traumas. They were not to know about the American girlfriend, by the way! That would have been terrible for them. It was one of the reasons that relationship didn't go far, but he was trying hard to be everything they needed. I can only imagine...
