Sorry, I don't even know if it's in translation yet...the author is Phillippe Claudel. Bara, it may be available in England? I just finished this book, and WOW. This is not for the faint-hearted, but it's BEAUTIFULLY written and so moving. A book about the darkness of human nature...Brodek was sent to a camp during WWII and comes back to his little mountain village...a strange (in both meanings of the word) man comes to the village with his mare and donkey which he treats like people, asks to stay, the villagers call him the "Anderer" (the Other) and things past and present unfold...I loved it.

Gosh, Niaru - never heard of it, shame on me! Will look, find and report back...
Still have Bel Canto sitting on my bedside table. (Uneaten, as yet, by Poop.)
Just in the middle of 'Brick Lane'.

What's Brick Lane?
If you have a Poop eating the books, I have....parakeets. We let them fly around and they love to go on the bookshelf and eat books. *sigh*

Heh heh! Parekeets!
Brick Lane is about a Bangladeshi girl, in an arranged marriage from her village to a London man.

My birds eat the books too! I've never heard of poops eating books but I have birds that eat books and poop!
Oh, and Bindi eats books.
Brick Lane sounds intersting and so does the one you suggested Nairu but I think it'd be way over my head!!!

Brick Lane - www.futuremovies.co.uk/review.asp?ID=760I think it's probably very Anglo-Indian. But it may relate to immigrants everywhere? I used to think how intuitive I was, finding a book then discovering that they'd just made a movie of it ... Not atall, I guess I just take in the film hype, forget about it - and buy the book! ;D ;D ;D

Brick Lane sounds great, it's going on my To-Read list. I just ordered Moloka'i at my local library, they didn't have any of the titles I wanted, grrr, so I settled on Umberto Eco's "The Island of the Day Before". I hope it's as good as The Name of the Rose!

LOL! Moloka'i is great. But 'The Name of The Rose'? For me an all time perfect. Good luck, I've tried other Umberto Eco - and struggled. I've not read the 'Island' - will try! After Bel Canto and Phillippe - if you promise to try Titus!
