Just started the book, primarily because I got an email from an aunt. One of those alarmist messages that people send to "All Users" in their address books--this one warning that we should not let children see the movie because the author is an athiest and the story will ruin our children, etc. Of course my aunt had not read the books herself, and neither had I, so I suggested we both do before condemning the thing. ;D

I also replied back that we should read the books first before we say anything else about it.

Oh dear, Ann! As an avowed atheist to an avowed Christian - (And we both know that from waaaay back ... ) I'm sorry, I didn't read any religious significance into those books. Yes, they are good V evil, same as most books, really. I find it sad that someone (who, as you say) hasn't even read the books, can just categorise it - demonise it. I know, I know - but I think he chose the archaic spelling 'daemon' precisely to remove it from the religion arena. Perhaps, Ann, your aunt and I would not see eye to eye. I'm sorry, though, because the books are strongly humanitarian, though, as I say, classically Good V Evil. Grrrr.

No no no apologies, Bara! I'm not reading this to see if I agree that it should be avoided. I'm reading it because several kids at the library have urged me to read it--it's one of their favorites--and because I'm curious to see what has got folks so stirred up. I have no problem with the author being athiest or anything else. I hope I judge a book by its literary merits, as far as I can do that, and so far this one looks worthy. But apparently I'm not the first to note that. It looks likely that this book is unflattering to Christianity--or at least to the way it has sometimes been practiced. I have a few criticisms of our behavior over the last 2000 years, myself!
