Half an hour later, Lucinda was presiding over an unprecedented event in the strict girls’ dorm.
Twelve little girls, three adults, a Barbie doll and Loose were sitting in her study, cross-legged on any surface they could find, draped in blankets and drinking cocoa.
The Time-Goblin was muttering in his sleep distractedly : “Four ay-emm!” “Time gerrruuupppp…zzz” At Lucinda’s signal, Lola Persia, who was closest to him, would tap him gently on the head so he subsided back into gentle whiffling snores.
The first year girls were wide-eyed as the others discussed the events of the evening.
There was a tap at Lucinda’s study door. Everyone froze, all eyes turned to the entrance.
“Can we come in?” whispered Albus. “It’s Axiom and me..”
“Boys and ELVES in the girls’ dorm?” Thought Lucy. Then sighed. “Come on in,” she said, “find a space.”
No sooner had the two interlopers sat down and gratefully accepted their mugs of cocoa, than the door swung inwards again.
Two little figures stood in the doorway.
“You’re Gryffs! How did you get into the Slyth dorm?” Exclaimed Lola.
“And THEY’RE boys,” pointed out Lily. “How did they get into the girls’ dorm?” She and her cousin Rose slid into the room.
Lucinda felt the situation slipping away from her.
“Does Fee know that you two are out of bed?” She tried to sound stern.
“Oh, she’s right behind us,” said Lily. “She’s just doing a final check and putting Mungo in charge, then she’s coming over. “
“And mum and dad or on their way, too,” Rose said, looking at her brother, Albus. “And Pet – and Jim.”
Albus grinned. “Pet?? Hogwarts???” he asked incredulously.
“Yes,” affirmed his cousin, Lily, bossily. “And Thea and Terrie and Hugo and Areez.”
Lola grinned broadly and began combing her sleep-tousled hair with her fingers.
“Oh, and maybe Uncle Hagrid and Professor Law…” continued Lily. “You see, I found some archives in the library, involving Hippofants and such, and …”
Lucinda closed her eyes and held up her hand for silence. And Lily fell silent.
“Anyone else?” she asked Lily, quietly.
“Just me,” replied an all-too-familiar Scottish voice from the open door, “wondering, Miss Malfoy, how you are going to explain this little – err – gathering of the clans in your study at this time of the – err - morning?”
All eyes turned in horror at the sound and the sight of their Headmistress standing tall and straight, outlined by wand light in the doorway.
Axiom howled and hurtled head-first towards Lucinda’s book-case.
“Four-fifteen and all’s weeeelllll…” the Time-Goblin carolled, sitting bolt upright in his little bed and staring blearily around in bewilderment. His eyes locked on McGonagall in the doorway and with a squeal, he followed Axiom towards oblivion.
Lucinda scrambled to her feet.
