Ad, we irish are something of a masochistic lot, which explains james joyce and a lot of other irish literature, save frank mccourt, who has a sense of humor about it.
"catch 22" and "murder in the cathedral" made me want to chuck them. also "darkness visible" GAAAAH! self absorption much? william styron was certainly a depressive, but he redeemed himself with "sophie's choice" - a book i really wanted to "unread" so i could enjoy it again.
