Out here in the "boonies" I don't have access to a Public Library unless I pay for the priviledge at one of them. Bummer....
That's the reason I have so many paperbacks.

Hi Terrie - Shall we have 3? So that people can select what they want to read? I would like to nominate Alexander McCall Smith and the 'No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.' www.alexandermccallsmith.co.uk/lda/index.htmlSHAME on me that I got her name wrong on this thread earlier! Who else?

Can we agree on three from all the titles and then people can pick and choose among them? Is that too much? I think we could do it.
Can you guys somehow pick on a three list? And what does Brooks want for July? Or we can pull three from a hat? I don't know? How did I get in this postion? Bara!!! It's your idea....whatcha wanna do?

I actually met Alexander at our book fair down at UCLA and listened to him read an excerpt from one of his books. The guy is the same in person with humor as in his books! I too nominate number one dective agency. I would reread that in a heart beat and I wanna read some of the newer ones! Hey Bara dear, have you read his Portugeese Sausage Dog book? Hysterically funny and I'll even airmail it to you if I can have your addy! ;D

Ooooh! As we say in England, Get YOU, Filly : "I met Alexander ..." Fist name terms, yet. No fair! Only author I ever met was Geoffrey Archer, at a 'ladies who lunch' thing. I could have smacked him across the chops with his own book. Horrible little man! No I haven't read that one, Filly. Is that your nomindation? Don't worry, I can grab it here (told you, there's this bookshop which has a sort of force field outside it, which sucks you in!) Maybe if Deb is having trouble sourcing stuff, you could send it to her? Roll up! Roll up - don't be shy! I would be grateful if someone would nominate something from the list of books I've just ordered ... I agree with Lynne, if we get more than 3 nominations, maybe we just pull 3 from a hat? (MWH! ) Or LYNNE pulls 3 from a hat. Then what? A sticky discussion thread for each book? WE HAVE CREATED A MONSTER! AAarghhh...

Yes, if a person has a domicile in the city limits of a town the Public Library is at their disposal, but not if a person lives in a rural area. If there are children in a household enrolled in a Public School who live outside the city limits they have the use of that towns Public Library. Last time I looked into it $25 was the monthly fee to have access. Plus, all the towns close to us are small farming communities that don't even have a Library.

In Hardy County, WV, they built a new elementary school about 10 or 12 years ago. Imagine my shock/surprise/dismay/outrage when I looked at the floor plans for the school at a PTA meeting and discovered that a library was not in the future plans for the school ! Let's just say that shock/surprise/dismay/outrage was just a polite way to put it. To make a long story short, after contacting the all the necessary politicians and the State Education Office, that STUPID plan was nixed. It turned out the 'local education officials' had chosen that particular company to build the school because they submitted the lowest bid . . . . . The School Board of Education claimed that they over-looked the fact that the floor plans did not include a library ! When they thanked me (publicly, in the next meeting) for pointing out that small fact, I politely asked them if they missed 'something that major' what else did they miss ?? ?? I don't think they liked me any more after that
