I admit it....I cried. I will raise my hand and say that I was one of those people who thought Barbaro should have been put down long before he ever was.....but that footage had me rethinking things. I can now see why they waited so long. Purely the horse's spirit. You can't fake that. He sure was amazing.
I don't know if it's my horomones or the fact that we just lost a horse to a catastrophic injury or what....but it touched me.
Watching the Ruffian footage (which I had never seen before) did me in as well.
I think the special was done really well and I have a different respect for what those people were trying to do.

I didn't see that ( I don't have HBO) but I did see the special they had on regular tv. It was a TOTAL tear jerker but like you said, I think they ONLY had Barbaro's best interest at heart.

ESPN has done a movie about Ruffian. It stars Sam Shepherd and airs this Saturday on ABC. They were already filming when Barbaro had his breakdown. They wanted the movie to coincide with the running of the Belmont since that's the track she broke down at and is buried at. I only bring it up, because Jen mentioned seeing the Ruffian footage and they talk so much about the similarities between what happened to her and what happened to Barbaro.
Also, my understanding is that it is very well done and true to life without a lot of embellishment like some movies. I, for one, plan on being home on Saturday night to catch that one. I don't have HBO, so I couldn't watch the Barbaro special, but I did catch the one on regular t.v. before the Preakness. Michael Matz is still my hero. I've never gotten the feeling that horses are a business to him and I really think he loved Barbaro.

Oh Dang it!! I don't get HBO, but just your talking about it made me get choked up. I did see the race on TV that Ruffian broke down in. I know it was a few years ago, but I remember it "like yesterday".

Bawled my eyes out. The Vet is the biggest hero for me. He still breaks down crying over a horse that he came to know so well.
The Ruffian movie will air, but it's at the center of some controversy. Whitely, Vasquez, and the company that owns the trademark to her name tried to get it stopped. They are claiming they didn't have any input on the movie and that it's not true to life. Next week the sides will meet to discuss.

Jen,
We were watching the race on TV when Ruffian broke down. This was before internet and the radio stations we carrying an hourly update. We just cried and cried after the race. Dr Reed (originally from Ohio State) put her down. I about decided I could never run a horse right then and there, even thought I love watching them race.
I was hesitant to watch the movie last night cause I knew we'd be crying again. Like everything Ruffian did, I just had to watch her again in spite of my trepidaton.
Such a legend gone way too soon.
I wonder how many folks let their kids watch who did not know her story and expexcted a Sea Biscuit like movie?
