I remember that race. I thought Ruffian was going to win. She was ahead of Foolish Pleasure. And then suddenly it was .........over. I remember her jockey trying to stop her, standing in the stirrups, trying to stop her. It was horrible. I have the book about 'Sophie'. Their nickname for her because she was built like a 'sofa'.

I read the book at a bookstore, too. I flipped to the end, even though I knew what happened. I got some really perplexed looks from people as I was sobbing, picturing her trying to run on for the win, even though she couldn't. That's more heart and determination than many humans would ever show.

In 1975 I was 25 years old and was watching the match race on TV. When Ruffian broke down it was horrific to see. Her leg was just flopping under her. I was so shocked I couldn't believe what I was seeing. She was so valiant and wanted to keep running. I want to see the movie and read the book and cry those tears again; for one so deserving of being remembered.

I don't think I could handle watching it... when I was at the Breeder's Cup (long story there while I was even present...) in October a filly broke her leg and tried to keep running. If the jockey could have gotten her to stop she might have been OK but she was also a filly with heart... she was put down. I sat in the bleachers and cried... and cried. I just wanted to go home (unfortunately, can't just do that when you're in NY and live in CA) and, well... cry. It just breaks my heart...
