Let's see; my name is Mary Ann. I'm old, have 4.5 horses, three dogs, and two cats as of today. I work as a trainer in a nice barn on a beautiful farm about ten minutes from me. I used to teach about horses on the college level, worked as a farrier, and worked in a tack shop. I love being around other people who love horses as much as I do! My horses include a 16.2 bay hunter that I'm showing now, my retired show horse which is an appendix, my retired mare's baby which is 19 months old as of this date, and an ancient mare that had belonged to my daughter. She's been retired about fifteen years. I also have a Friesian baby due to arrive around April 25th! I can hardly wait! My dogs are all Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and are far too 'helpful' with the horses. I have an assortment of horses in training, from English pleasure horses to a reiner! I love taking on 'projects,' the lost souls that other trainers find incorrigible or unmanageable, but my chiropractor doesn't approve! I think I'm going to love this place! I see so many names of people I've enjoyed on other boards in the past and admired; I'm so glad to have found you again!

Oh, Larimor. :wavey: You're not nuts ;D A woman at a barn I used to board at (before I bought my farm) rode her 23 year old OTTB in endurance races. He did really well coming in in the top three at the majority of races.

Ooops. Like some other people here, I made a buncha posts to the main board before I found this topic here.
I'm Janet, and Simone is my 13-year-old daughter. She's the proud owner of Quasar (registered name: Dr. Pete Stagg), a 5-year-old OTTB. We live in Berkshire County, Mass., and keep Quasar at Sunridge Stables, housed at Eastover Resort in Lenox. There are 20 horses there, many of whom are exracers that the owner, Joan, has retrained to be trail horses.
For the past two years, Simone has spent nearly every Saturday and school vacation/summer day riding at Sunridge, and helping out with the trail rides for the guests there. She has taken lessons off and on (mostly on) since she was 5, and has been to two different summer horse camps.
Up until a year or so ago, I figured that riding was just a nice little thing she liked to do (the barns we'd picked out were low-key, not much into events/showing, though she did win some ribbons at a few small, local shows). I thought she'd outgrow it. But it finally dawned on me (duh!) that this was her real, true passion in life (piano, soccer, softball, karate--none of all that stood a chance). So I talked it over with her and with my dear hubby (Simone's stepdad) and together we decided she was ready to own her own horse. And, from her experience at Sunridge, she knew she wanted an OTTB.
Trouble was, I didn't know Thing One about horses, really. But once we'd made the decision, I plunged in. I started scouring books and Web sites, cornering any horsey person I could find to ask questions, and (best of all) hanging out at Sunridge myself on Saturdays. Besides learning a lot in a year, I fell in love with horses--something I hadn't actually expected. I'm a book editor, more at home with a pen than a hoof pick, so I was amazed to find the smell of manure growing on me. I'm still a rank beginner at riding, but I can now manage to trot on the trails a little. (I'll never be able to keep pace with Simone, but that's not the point.) So, with help from a broker, we found Quasar. Simone loves him, and for such a young horse fairly fresh off the track, he's really easygoing (except for the being-groomed issues he has, which I posted about on the other board--in fact, it was while I was searching for info that might help us with this problem that I stumbled across thie site). He's also quick to learn and got right on board with the trail riding.
Simone and her best friend Lindsay (who also bought an OTTB recently, an 8-year-old mare named Royal Laughter) now ride every day, either on the trails or in the ring, where they practice a lot of basics and some beginner-type jumping. They also want to start some endurance riding; we just recently learned about the Eastern Competitive Trail Riding Association, and they're hoping to enter a ride or two this year in the junior division. (Anyone else here an ECTRA member?)
The people at Sunridge (Joan, the owner, and Jenn and Jackie, who also board there) are great about helping the girls with any daily care issues that arise, and they give riding pointers as things go along, but they have their hands full with running the trail rides and can't really give formal lessons. So we'll probably have an instructor come in for lessons (as soon as it's not so bitterly cold--there's no indoor ring).
OK. This is really long. I'd better start editing myself! But I'm glad to have found this forum--people here have been so nice already.
Take heart, all. Spring will be here soon.

Hi Everyone, I'm Myrna. My horse, Rum Car just celebrated his 32nd birthday on Sunday. He was a race horse way, way back when. After his racing career he became a 3-day eventer. He has a championship eventing cooler. Then a couple more women owned him and finally, in 1989 he came to live with me...forever. He is the joy of my life. He's going into his 8th year of retirement and looks wonderful. His back is still perfectly straight and his legs are completely clean. The vets are pretty amazed. As for me, I work with Old Friends. We got our first horse, a mare by Exceller, this week so we are very excited about that. We are waiting the arrival of two stallions from Japan to join the mare, Narrow Escape, at the Old Friends facility in Kentucky. The stallions are Creator and Sunshine Forever. If you want to read more about the organization, go to www.oldfriendsequine.com and you'll find out lots of cool stuff. See you on the forum!
