Check out www.craigslist.com for your area, too. Not sure you can find any for $4/bale this year.

hay up this way (mid michigan) is selling at the auctions 4-5 dollars a bale. (good horse hay and/or alfalfa) but at the local sales there are buyers from other states buying everything they can to fill a semi each week and taking it south to sell. Makes it tougher on us locals since they will run the prices up something fierce. Good for the farmers though, they have had a couple bad years and guess they deserve a bonus now and again. Farmings a pretty thankless job...

Yeah I am still looking... I would even take oat hay as long as the oat heads were still attached... I need something... I got a few bales for $6.00 but at that price I could only get a handful... I keep praying that I will find something before the snow flies...

There are a lot of options these days to help stretch your hay supply..... Last winter I 'only' fed 5 round rolls of hay to 3 horses. With regular worming and shelter from the weather they did just fine. No weight loss and two feedings a day, just like the rest of the year.
Try adding these ingredients to your horse's diet and he will be fine ......
Beet pulp Alfalfa cubes (or pellets if you prefer) Hay stretcher (bought at Tractor Supply in a pellet form) 10 % sweet feed Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and a horse mineral
salt block available at all times, as well as a source of water that does not freeze
And my very favorite Supplement, SOURCE

Beet pulp, the horses will NOT touch it I have tried several times.. They are on a sweet feed 12% once aday now, we are not grain people.. Salt/mineral blocks in every stall already. Can you please tell me more about hay stretcher? is it like horse chow?

Angie, have you tried introducing beet pulp to them gradually ? Another thing, if you are feeding them all the hay they want now, of course they may not want to touch the beet pulp I am not saying that they need to be 'starving' to eat the beet pulp. But, the beet pulp is aimed at being a replacement for the hay that you cannot find at a decent price. Feeding the beet pulp will literally allow you to feed them a flake or two of hay two times a day instead of a bale apeice every day ;D Something else that I didn't mention in my other post...... I put the beet pulp, alfalfa cubes and the supplements in a bucket and add warm water, after soaking for 30 minutes or so, I add the rest of the ingredients and stir well. By the time I feed it to my horses, it looks like something that has already been chewed up and swallowed, but they love it You asked for more information about the hay stretcher.... It is a pelleted form of hay, probably grass hay, it looks like a light colored rabbit pellet. I buy mine at Tractor Supply, but have heard that Southern States dealers carry it also. And it is labled, HAY STRETCHER

I forgot to mention, I would also kill for $4 a bale hay, since hay is nonexistant in our area this year !
